IMPROVISAATIOTEATTERI STELLA POLARIS
Where to see Stella Polaris next?
Stella Polaris is a Helsinki-based improvisation theatre, which had its beginning in 1990. At that time a few
foolhardy actors of the Espoo City Theatre decided to jump into the great unknown: the amazing world of
improvised theatre. In 1993 Improvisaatioteatteri Stella Polaris had its official beginning. “A company consisting of
people who are committed and not afraid to take risks” could be a citation straight from the artistic manifest of Stella
Polaris - if ever one had been written. The development from the initial sketch formed improvisation embryos all the way to the current full-length improvised plays is a proof of artistic ambition.
Cultural exchange, both in the form of the association's visits abroad as well as of bringing trainers and performers
to Finland, has played an important part in Stella Polaris' work. Stella Polaris actually has regular cooperation with
foreign improvisation theatre companies. Stella Polaris' members are also specialized in teaching improvisation,
musical improvisation, interaction skills, performing and articulacy. Stella offers instruction in its own workshops
and our trainers teach people all over Finland. There are very few professions left for which the members of Stella Polaris would not have taught the finesses of acceptance and the ability to laugh at oneself.
In the Turbiinisali at Cable Factory there are two performance periods per year, and they include improvised plays
and music-based performances. In addition to the performances at Cable Factory, Stella Polaris is also constantly visiting other places – considerably more nowadays than in the beginning.
