Welcome to the Musical Theatre Kapsäkki!
THEATRE
Musical Theatre Kapsäkki suits many tastes and offers versatile and rousing performances for a wide audience. After spending 10 years as a touring theatre company Kapsäkki finally got its own premises in the autumn of 2009. The hall has kept its beautiful 1950s look and offers an elegant backdrop for a substantial evening of theatre. The place also offers good acoustics and modern theatre techniques that meet the many-sided demands of both Kapsäkki and all the visiting theatre companies.
Kapsäkki has produced performances both on its own and as joint collaborations. Its own productions during recent years have been e.g. Tuliterä musical (2010), Maukka ja Väykkä (2009), Fetissikabaree (2009), Halmhatten, Filttofflan och den stora smällen (2009), Parasta ennen — lauluja suoraan Suomesta (2008) and the operas Kuninkaiden kirja (2009) and Anna Liisa (2008). Joint productions have been done in collaboration with e.g. Helsinki Festival, Finnish National Opera and Helsinki City Theatre. A great deal of Kapsäkki productions are premieres and all the performances have live music. The next joint production will be Mahagonnyn kaupungin nousu ja tuho ("The rise and fall of Mahagonny city") in collaboration with the UMO and Avanti! orchestras.
In 2002 Kapsäkki received the Onnimanni prize of the Finnish Youth Literature Institute for its musical Risto Räppääjä ja Pakastaja-Elvi. In 2004, national radio's Musiikkiuutiset ("Music News", YLE) expressed its gratitude to Kapsäkki by offering the company the "Musical deed of the year" award for its work in developing musical theatre and in acting for the benefit of children's music culture. In January 2010 Musical Theatre Kapsäkki gained recognition in the Helsingin kulttuuriteko competition ("Cultural deed of Helsinki").
STARTING YEAR
Musical Theatre Kapsäkki was founded at the end of 1990s as a result of the ardent will of seven Finnish artists to do unique and high quality Finnish musical theatre. These people were Reetta Ristimäki, Marko Salo, Rebekka Angervo, Kaisu Kurki, Päivi Kantola, Veli Kujala and Juha Hostikka. In the year 2000 the Kapsäkki Opera and Theatre Troupei became a cooperative, which nowadays has 37 members. In 2007 the name of the theatre changed to the Kapsäkki Musical Theatre in order to better reflect the repertoire of the theatre.
