The stage of the one-room theatre Jurkka is small but can become as wide as the universe if necessary. In the past it has been both a reef far out in the sea and a luxurious living room in the posh Westend; it has been both a modern office and the world of Peer Gynt and Hamlet. The atmosphere is such that people sense the heat both onstage and in the auditorium. The magic of theatre is in the air and one can feel it on the skin and in the bones. The sounds from the street become part of the performances; spectators share the joys and the sorrows of the plays with the actors more tangibly than in theatres usually. In Theatre Jurkka the actor is always in close-up and every spectator follows the play from the best seat.

The founder of the theatre was Emmi Jurkka (1899-1990), who also served as the theatre director for several years. Her daughter Vappu Jurkka continued her work as the theatre director 1981-1993.
